The boundaries are no standard, just an established convention (here according to the Pew Research Center) that different sources shift by a year or two. Take the borderline years, such as 1996 and 1997, with a grain of salt: what matters more than the year is the technologies and events a person grew up with.
What is the classification good for
In marketing, generations serve as a quick shorthand for targeting: each grew up with different media and shops differently. Millennials are today's strongest buying group, Generation Z decides based on social media and recommendations, boomers hold the largest savings and read longer texts. But a shorthand remains a shorthand: a specific person may not resemble their generational average, and segmenting by behaviour is always more accurate than by birth year.
